It is a pleasure to be appointed Club Captain for 2026 and I would like to thank the members and committee for their support.
I have been a member of Gifford Golf Club for over 30 years. In 2017 I was asked to take on the role of Handicap Secretary on an short term basis, which turned out to mean ‘for the next eight years’. For the last year I have also been Vice-Captain.
In addition to my involvement at club level, I have a great deal of practical experience in other golf related volunteer roles including membership of the Scottish Golf Rules Panel, acting as a referee, and a member of the Scottish Golf Course Rating team which involves assessing course and slope ratings for golf courses. I’ve also been a volunteer marshal at many high-profile events in East Lothian, most recently as Hole Captain of the Gifford team at the Scottish Open. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this.
Gifford is often described as a ‘Hidden Gem’ and is widely recognised as one of the most friendly and welcoming clubs in the area, offering an inclusive environment for players of all abilities. The club has also earned a well-deserved reputation for the quality of both the course and clubhouse.
I look forward to working with the members, staff and committee to continue promoting Gifford Golf Club and further enhancing its standing and profile.
Ian Whyte, Captain
